Parkour, break dancing and a renewed obsession with fitness and bodybuilding are said to have contributed to the increase in men stripping down and mounting the pole. All agree male pole dancing has grown in popularity over the past five years, with much of that interest coming from heterosexual men. The dancers themselves are split, sexuality-wise, pretty much 50-50. "It's like a rock concert – it's crazy," Shield says. But the sculpted bodies and complex gymnastics attract both girls and boys. It will be hosted, as ever, by one of Sydney's best-known drag queens, Maxi Shield, who promises to "make it snow" with an extravagant opening number. The grand final is a night of high camp, with a significant gay following. "Last year we had guys wearing six inch heels. "Personality is a huge thing, especially for Mr Pole," she says. Unlike other pole dancing competitions – which have male divisions – her contest is about theatre as much as fitness. While lifting your own body weight is a prerequisite, studio owner and Mr Pole director Vanessa Brecht says character and sense of humour are also key.
